The Campbell Plan

Dr. Thomas Campbell co-authored The China Study with his father, a book that has been instrumental in the world of nutrition and in the medical arena. While The China Study offers the “why” of eating a whole-food, plant-based diet, The Campbell Plan follows that up with the “how.” It offers evidence-based answers to the important questions that come up when eating plants.

Dr. Campbell explains at the beginning of his book.. “There is no need to yo-yo or search for secrets. This book is about teaching you what the optimal diet is and helping you get there, without the drama.”

Campbell doesn’t just offer the researcher’s view. He’s a practicing physician familiar with considerations that come up when making food choices in the real world.

Topics covered include:

  • Refined plant-based foods like sugar and soy
  • Oils & fats
  • Fish
  • Wheat & Gluten-free
  • Organic & GMO
  • Supplements
  • Feeding kids

The foods that Dr. Campbell recommends are no surprise:

  • Whole grains: Brown rice, oats, quinoa, barley, rye, 100% whole grain pasta, tortillas and bread, 100% whole grain cereals
  • Legumes: beans, lentils, peas
  • Fruit: fresh, frozen, dried
  • Veggies: any and all fresh or frozen
  • Herbs & spices
  • Nuts & seeds

Basically anything that comes from the ground is on the menu, animal flesh or animal excretions are off. To make it even more practical, he offers brands, substitutions and label reading tips as well as shopping lists and meal plans.

I have to mention that I found myself drawn to a statement towards the end of his book that seems ironic coming from a doctor: “I tell my patients that the lifestyle choices they make are more important and more powerful for long-term health and disease than any pill or procedure they can get form me or any other doctor.”

AKA – we’re in control of our own health! Go us!!!
