Quick & Easy Pizza Sauce

Eating whole, plant based foods doesn’t mean you must live without pizza! This thick and tasty sauce is easy to throw together and adds a ton of flavor to any pizza or flatbread.

Top a Quinoa Flatbread Crust or Bread Maker Pizza Dough with this sauce and your favorite veggies for a pizza-night masterpiece. Remember to add nutritional yeast for extra tang and nutrients. If you’re wanting to speed up the pizza making process, substitute 100% whole grain bread (we get ours in the freezer section at Meijer) for the crust or make pita pizzas.

You’ll notice that this pizza sauce – like many of our recipes – is full of herbs and spices. These offer multiple benefits!

First – herbs and spices add tons of flavor! The Standard American Diet is often flavored with salt, fat and sugar. Nothing health promoting. ??? Herbs and spices offer yummy-ness without the negative side effects of salt, fat and sugar.

Second – herbs and spices also offer health promoting nutrients. Per ounce, many herbs and spices have more antioxidants than veggies and fruit. We’re not talking about those that are hard to pronounce or impossible to find. We’re talking the herbs and spices found in any grocery and (hopefully) your spice cabinet.

Take oregano – it was shown to suppress cancer cell growth in a petri-dish study. Pretty cool for an herb that gives pizza that amazing pizza flavor!

Just as plant pigments can be beneficial for our health, so can herbs and spices. Include a variety at every meal for a mix of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant benefits!
