Joaquin Phoenix & Rest of Hollywood Eat Plant-Based

Unless you were intently watching the Golden Globes last night (4 hours seems like a bit much, Hollywood), you probably missed a small line from Joaquin Phoenix about what was served for dinner. While accepting Best Actor in a Drama for his role as Arthur Fleck in “Joker”, Joaquin thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) for serving a plant-based meal for dinner – Woohoo!

After giving a good fist pump in the air, I grabbed my phone and looked up “Joaquin Phoenix plant based”. I found some decent articles about his history as a vegan. Mr. Phoenix changed his diet originally for ethical reasons, later changing his entire lifestyle and advocating for animal welfare. The HFPA followed in Joaquin’s ethical footsteps.

“The climate crisis is impossible to ignore and after speaking with our peers, and friends in the community, we felt challenged to do better,” said Lorenzo Soria, president of the organization, in a statement to CNN. “The decision to serve an entirely plant-based meal was embraced by our partners at the Beverly Hilton, and represents a small step in response to a big problem.” (CNN)

While the impact of animal agriculture on the climate crisis was not the genesis of Wholly Plants, seeing a plant-based diet being mentioned on such a big stage is very exciting! Through our continued research on the topic, we have come to respect the positive impacts a plant-based diet has on animal welfare and the Earth, as well. Just as I looked up Joaquin’s history as a vegan due to the mentioning, we hope others do the same and find more information about eliminating animal products from their diets.
