1-Step Chocolate Banana Nice Cream

We’re pulling an oldie but a goodie out of the archives to kick off our Summer Nice Cream Series! For the next two weeks we will have five nice cream recipes coming your way. We will then end the series with a Nice Cream Recipe Roundup including all the best Nice Cream recipes out there in the food blogging world. Too much nice cream?.. Ha! Of course not.

To start things off we have our trusty 1-Step Chocolate Banana Nice Cream that I enjoy at least one evening every single week. It’s that good.

I’m not sure about other families, but ice cream was always a staple in our diet growing up. Without fail there was always a tub in the freezer and for every birthday and holiday we made homemade ice cream. It. Was. Awesome. So you can imagine how bummed we were when we finally accepted that ice cream was a tradition best left in the past. (To learn more about the detrimental effects of dairy check out The Cheese Trap.)

Thankfully it didn’t take long to find an equally delicious and satisfying dairy-free dessert without the saturated fat, cholesterol and hormones found in dairy.

Nice Cream is essentially pureed frozen bananas (and/or other frozen fruit) with flavorings added to it. So simple! It has a very similar texture to soft serve ice cream. You can also freeze it for an hour or two and voila – you have perfect hand dipped ice cream.

It may feel like you’re making a sacrifice for the sake of health so forgo the traditional tubs of ice cream is the freezer aisle, but I promise, when you start eating nice cream you’ll realize that it doesn’t taste like a sacrifice. It’s easily just as good as traditional not-so-healthy ice cream.

When buying almond or soy milk be sure to get the unsweetened, unflavored version. This frozen treat is plenty sweet without the loads of added sugar in the flavored almond milk options (i.e. Vanilla or Chocolate).

Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Keyword: Banana, chocolate, Frozen Dessert, Ice-cream, nice cream
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Servings: 1

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Almond Milk unflavored, unsweetened
  • 1 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 2 Tbsp Cacao powder (or cocoa powder)
  • 3 Frozen Banana

Instructions

  • Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender and process until smooth, stopping to scrape down sides as needed. If consistency is too thick, add a small amount of almond milk at a time as needed to reach desired consistency.

Notes

If you prefer a firmer hand dipped texture, place in the freezer for 1-2 hours.
The flavor options are limitless. You can use the same almond milk and frozen banana proportions but add whatever flavorings sound good to you. Some we recommend are...
  • Frozen strawberries, raspberries, cherries
  • Mint extract (with chocolate for chocolate mint ice-cream)
  • Peanut Butter
  • Dark Chocolate Chips or Cacao Nibs
Any other non-dairy milk can be used in place of almond milk (i.e. coconut milk, soy milk, hemp milk, etc.)
If freezing the nice cream for longer than 2 hours, we recommend adding a splash of rum or an alcohol-based extract to prevent it from freezing too solid.

  • This is amazingly like chocolate ice cream and is so healthy. A desert that- more you eat the healthier you are.

  • I just made this and it was very satisfying! I made double and split it with my grandson, who loved it! In my bowl I added some peanut butter, swirled it in and stuck it in the freezer for a bit. Delish and no guilt!

    • I’m glad to hear that you liked it! Great idea customizing it with peanut butter. Yum!
