Goji Berries

These small berries have been studied extensively and continually produce impressive results. They have one of the highest antioxidant capacities of dried fruit and more melatonin (used to improve sleep) than tart cherries. Antioxidants have been shown to protect the body from dangerous molecules that can cause disease. A specific antioxidant in goji berries – zeaxanthin – is shown to promote eye health. This antioxidant is better absorbed when combined with fat, so a goji trail mix with nuts and seeds is an excellent choice.

Goji berries are often sold dried. While you can find goji powders and juices, dried is your best bet since it’s the most WHOLE form. They have a sweet, and slightly tart, flavor and are great for adding to a trail mix or sprinkling on salads, oatmeal, cold cereal and roasted veggies. When baking, it’s easy to substitute goji berries in any recipes that would typically have raisins or dried cranberries.

Goji berries are easy to find in the bulk section or with the dried fruit in natural food stores and even in some supermarkets. You can sometimes find them at Asian supermarkets for less than half the price, but they are often sold as Lycium berries. Or you can order them on Amazon, just click the link below.

As with all healthy foods, goji berries by themselves are not a cure-all, even though a quick Google search might lead one to believe so. While they are definitely a nutrition powerhouse, they are just one tool in your plant-based toolbox. Sprinkling them over your Ben & Jerry’s will not create a healthy treat.
