Chocolate Banana Breakfast Shake

This is a quick, simple, and delicious breakfast shake! It’s my go-to at least twice a week. For me sometimes a big breakfast doesn’t sound appetizing early in the morning, even though I know it’s the most important meal of the day! This was the reason I started making this shake in the mornings. It’s much easier for me to drink my breakfast when my appetite is low.

Those who regularly eat breakfast in the morning tend to have better weight control compared to breakfast skippers. This is likely a result of reduced hunger and cravings throughout the day, which generally leads to healthier food choices. Although skipping breakfast does result in a calorie deficit early in the day, usually by the end of the day breakfast skippers have consumed more calories for lunch, dinner, and snacks to void that deficit plus more.

If you find yourself dreading breakfast then this might be a good solution for you too! Its also pretty awesome that it only takes a couple minutes to blend together and its like having dessert for breakfast! And as an added bonus, when you regularly eat a substantial breakfast your body then expects that meal every morning and over time your breakfast appetite will grow!

Ingredients

  • 1 Frozen Banana
  • 3 or 4 Frozen Sweet Cherries optional
  • 1 handful Leafy greens
  • 1 cup Almond Milk unflavored & unsweetened
  • 1 Tbsp Flaxseed ground
  • 1 Tbsp Chia Seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp Cacao Powder or cocoa

Instructions

  • Place almond milk and leafy greens in a blender and blend until smooth.
  • Add the rest of the ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth.

Notes

I like to add some peanut butter every now and then to mix it up! You can also add rolled oats to the shake if you want it to be a little more substantial and filling. I always add a handful of whatever leafy greens I have whether its spinach, kale, chard, etc, and since the shake is so rich in chocolate you can't tell they're there. I have also discovered that you can slip in about a third of a beet without affecting the flavor.
Another awesome tweak I have made to this recipe is adding iced coffee in place of almond milk. Oddly enough I found that I couldn't taste the coffee in the shake, but it did deliver a nice shot of caffeine without the cream & sugar!

  • The girls loved this and couldn’t believe I let them have “chocolate milk” for breakfast. ? Do you think you could freeze it in molds and make popsicles?

    • I hadn’t thought of that but I bet that would be amazing!! It would be like a banana fudgesicle!
